Item/Description: Stunning antique/vintage early Arne Nordlie royal blue enamel Norwegian sterling silver pin with exquisite and ornate Guilloché designs, including the word “Norge” (meaning “Norway”) on the lower portion of the brooch
***In addition to the working, simple horizontal C-clasp pin closure on the reverse side top portion of the backing, there is another slim silver bar running horizontally across the pin on its lower portion. We are uncertain as to the purpose for this bar, and are mentioning it so that those of you who do know will be aware of it (possibly something to do with ladies’ lace and/or scarves or gentlemen’s ties/ascots?)
***The reverse side of this pin does not exhibit the bubbled stippling often attributed to his jewelry works, and instead remains smooth
Age/Period: Antique/Vintage - ca pre-1910 (late 1800s) to ca 1940s
***Given the delicacy and style of this pin as well as its floral, lacy-like aesthetic surface and borders designs, we initially dated this pin to no later than 1910.
This assessment was further supported by its old “C”-style clasp, since pieces with this type of closure usually date to (depending upon the reference source) either pre-1900 or no later than pre-1910.
Additionally, sterling pieces bearing the 830 mark were beginning to be phased out and replaced with 925 sterling after 1920, so that further narrowed down the dating of this piece to ca 1920.
However, the “Arne Nordlie” goldsmith company was not established until 1946. That being said, prior to starting his own business, Arne Nordlie had worked with his father, Karl Nordlie, at the workshop of J. Tostrup in Oslo. His father began working for that workshop ca 1883 and his son Arne joined him in their employ ca late 1800s-early 1900s, and continued to work there until leaving to start his own company in 1946.
Based upon this research information, it is possible that, though Arne Nordlie did not start his own business until 1946, he could have been using the same maker’s mark even when he was producing jewelry that was not from his later independently-owned company but, rather, from an earlier time.
Alternatively, if this pin is in fact one that was not produced until after Arne Nordlie began his own company in 1946 it is, at the very least, one of the earlier/earliest pieces produced by them.
Unfortunately we have been unable to definitively ascertain when this particular hallmark of Arne Nordlie came into existence and usage by him and/or his father, Karl Nordlie, thus the broad date range estimate for this lovely piece.
Manufacturer/Identification/Markings/Country of Origin: Maker is Arne Nordlie. Country of origin is Norway. Reverse side of pin is marked “830 S” followed by Arne Nordlie’s hallmark.
