Item Description & Subject Matter: Vintage 1969 mid-century modern “Wine Tasting Monk in His Wine Cellar” reproduction genre painting by artist A. Buck, after a famous Eduard Theodor Ritter von Grutzner Monk-scenario Painting, delightfully depicting an adorable and ever-so-slightly tipsy (see his oh-so rosy-red nose) ;~) Franciscan/Dominican/Benedictine/Catholic Monk leisurely sampling the “fruits” of his labors (corny pun intended) down in his wine cellar.
Surrounded by barrels of fermenting wines, he is holding a half-filled pitcher of wine in one hand, and a full wine glass in the other.
Attention to detail and quality of artistic workmanship is exemplary. The artist has done a stupendous job of depicting variations of light throughout the painting. While in the slightly distant background section of the cellar sunlight is brightly streaming through the glass panes of the window, in the foreground section of the painting, where the monks is prominently featured, she has also managed to beautifully capture the much softer glow of light afforded by a burning candle taper which rests atop one of the wine kegs immediately adjacent to where the monk is standing.
What a wonderful “back-of-the-bar” or wine room display this marvelous vintage work of art would make!
