Item Description: Vintage ca. 1940s-1970 framed hand-colored “Hinkle” family crest/coat-of-arms/shield/escutcheon heraldry/heraldic ancestry/genealogy armory print/picture with additional unique escutcheon-shaped black-rimmed 3-dimensional plastic-window overlay piece highlighting/emphasizing the anchor & helmet symbols.

Excerpted Research Information: “The beginnings of the name ‘Hinkle’ are in the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. It comes from when they lived at Hinckley, in Leicestershire. The place-name Hinckley is derived from the Old English personal name Hynca, and leah, an Old English word that meant ‘forest clearing.’ Spelling variations include: Hinkley, Hincle, Hinchley, Hinckley and others. First found in Leicestershire w they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.”

Motto: (though NOT DISPLAYED on, FYI the official Motto is “The Ancient Arms of”) Elements/Images/Imagery Pictured on Crest and Symbolism: Knight/Suit of Armor - the Soul Guiding the Body, Man’s Journey Through Life; Wreath of Laurel Leaves & Berries (Triumph) with an Alphabet Letter ? C/G at its Top and a Sword/Dagger/Dart/Sabre/Scimitar Through Its Center (Justice & Military Honour); Lion Couchant Guardant - Dauntless Courage Colors & Symbolism: Gold - Generosity & Elevation of the Mind; Red - Warrior or Martyr, Military Strength & Magnanimity; Black - Constancy or Grief; Yellow; Blue - Truth & Loyalty; Green - Hope, Joy & Loyalty in Love

Age Period: Vintage - ca. 1940s-1970. The back side of the cardboard backing to the companion coat-of-arms picture in matching frame that this crest was originally acquired with, for the Surname “Ratcliff,” is marked as having been a “Good Friday” birthday gift in 1970, so the piece dates to no later than that time. Likely the pair of ancestry pictures belonged to a married couple representing each of their respective surnames.

Size/Measurements: Frame - 13"W x 16"H. Print - 11"W x 14"H

Condition:

*Print is near mint, retaining vividly crisp imagery on parchment-style paper (the result of having been well-protected by its framing and glass over the years).

*Frame is very good, evincing only a modicum of surface wood scratching & nicks.
