Item/Description: Pair of vintage new-in-package Pagoda pattern “Home in the Hills Craft” Yao tribe Thailand completed framed cross-stitch “pictures”.

The lovely geometric designs of these hand embroidered completed textile crafts “pictures” are authentic traditional patterns of the Thai Yao (a/k/a Mein) hill people.

***Both Original Paper Inserts read: “Home in the Hills Craft. Pattern: Pagoda. Dry Clean. Made in Chiengkam County, Chiengrai Province, Thailand.

HAND EMBROIDERY (Traditional Yao Patterns): High on the slopes which form the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma, live the Yao, a primitive tribe of Chinese origin. Gay and colorful in their bright embroidered trousers and turbans, and with a fluffy collar of the reddest or red wool, the women of this tribe have for hundreds of years trekked off to their fields where they raise rice for their families, corn for their pigs and horses, and opium for cash with which to buy the silk thread to embroider their trousers, and silver for their heavy neck rings and bracelets which are their bank accounts. Until suppression of narcotics forced them to seek a new means of livelihood, they embroidered only for themselves. Now many of their more than 50 cross stitch patterns – the heritage of their 2500 year history – are available on items for you.”
