Item/Description: Vintage 1935 Luise Rainer “Escapade” movie Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studio publicity still celebrity head shot photograph LR-2.

***We once owned a Hollywood-themed restaurant/nightclub with in excess of 2,000 autographs and entertainment memorabilia items on display. This photograph was once a part of that vast collection which we have been gradually liquidating over the past several years!

The film “Escapade” marked the occasion of the Hollywood début of Louise Rainer.

This glossy black & white photo contains a handwritten notation on the reverse side that states: “Second week Louise Rainer in Escapade Capitol ???Wk??? July 12” (“Capitol” refers to the Capitol Theater in New York according to a July 6, 1935 NY Times Review about the movie).

Imprinted on the front of the photo in the lower left corner is the attribution “Louise Rainer Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer” (the photo spells her first name incorrectly) and in the right corner the photo still identification code “LR-2.”

Excerpted Online Research Information About Louise Rainer (12 January 1910 – 30 December 2014): “Luise Rainer was a German-born Austrian and American film actress who became one of the leading ladies of Hollywood in the 1930s.

Her first American film role was in ‘Escapade’ in 1935. Following the film's release, Rainer was hailed as ‘Hollywood's next sensation.’

She was the first Hollywood star to win multiple Academy Awards and the first person to win them in consecutive years, a feat that has only been repeated by four actors ever since. The movies for which she earned her Best Actress Academy Awards are also the movies she is most famous for - ‘The Great Ziegfeld’ (her first win) and then the following year ‘The Good Earth.’

At the time of her death, she was the longest-lived actress ever to have received an Academy Award.”

Excerpted Online Research Information About the movie “Escapade”: “The new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film at the Capitol (Capital) Theater in New York, with a release date of July 6, 1935 in the U.S.A.

The movie is also known as ‘Masquerade’ because it was a remake of the movie ‘Masquerade in Vienna.’”
