Item/Description:  Vintage 1910s-1920s Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. candid bike riding photograph by Kadel & Herbert News Service.

***We once owned a Hollywood-themed restaurant/nightclub with in excess of 2,000 autographs and entertainment memorabilia items on display. This photograph was once a part of that vast collection which we have been gradually liquidating over the past several years!

This glossy sepia-toned black & white photo is backstamped on its reverse side with an official Kadel & Herbert News Service attribution and also bears a typewritten photo still identification #: H-10432-S.

This particular candid photo depicts THE celebrity couple of that time, Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. (who were often referred to as “Hollywood Royalty”) riding their bicycles. They are “at rest” sitting on their bikes in front of a wooden building which appears to be on one of their Hollywood sets. Unlike bicycle riders of today, these two are dapperly decked out in some of their finest and most fashionable attire.

*A small remnant strip of scrapbook-type paper originally attached to the lower portion of the back side of the photo contained a typed notation that additionally references the copyright protection of “Kadel & Herbert News Service” as well as provided a photo still identification number. Only a tiny piece of that typed notation was ever present at the time we first acquired this photo, and what there is of that notation reads:

Condition Summary: Excellent, well-preserved vintage collectible condition. Corners remain sharp and pointed. There is a normal modicum of minimal handling wear to photo surface itself, visible only when photo is held at an angle vs. viewed “straight on.” As stated above, a small remnant strip of scrapbook-type paper remains affixed to the lower portion of the back side of the photo. The tiny piece of paper that contains the typewritten attribution notation with the “photo identification #” is still present has separated from the photo backing.

*Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford met in 1916, were married on March 28, 1920, and separated in the early 1930s. During the years they were married, Fairbanks and Pickford were regarded as "Hollywood Royalty," famous for entertaining at their Beverly Hills estate, Pickfair.

Fairbanks was a founding member of United Artists. He was also a founding member of The Motion Picture Academy and hosted the 1st Academy Awards in 1929. Fairbanks was referred to as "The King of Hollywood", a nickname later passed on to actor Clark Gable.
