Item/Description:   Matchless Grove Co. USA Jason Christoble “Orion the Wizard/Warlock/Sorcerer” Wyndshire clay stoneware vintage 1981 candle holder sculpture (like new, never used).

Handcrafted by renowned fantasy/mythical creations artisan Jason Christoble (J. Christoble), whose artistic creations are fairly rare, thus making them highly collectible and sought after, this intricately detailed figural candleholder, in a stunningly attractive antiqued ivory & dark brown patina finish, delightfully depicts a seer/magician with his wise old trusted owl familiar perched on his shoulder. Elaborately costumed in a flowing cloak/robe with a traditional sorcerer’s pointed hat on top of his head that is decoratively adorned with half/crescent moons and stars, he is hunched over and peering into a glass crystal ball which he is rubbing with his hands. The crystal ball rests on top of a skull/skeleton head, which in turn sits atop an open book (of magic & spells most likely) :~).

The back side of this sculptural figurine is open, and has a round recessed/indented fitted hole that is marvelously & cleverly decorated with a mystical pentagram symbol into which a votive or tea light candle may be inserted. When lit, the candle will shine through the crystal ball and provide a soft, glowing illumination when viewed from the front.

Perhaps he will be able to see into your future!

***Though the original paper label is missing from this piece, we did find a copy of it on one of the fan sites for J. Christoble and it reads: “Hello! My name is Orion. This handcrafted item is made by magic & little people in the Matchless Grove. We come from a land of strange and mysterious creatures. Our magical sculptures are made from Wyndshire clay (a sturdy, washable stoneware). Caution: Candles should not be left unattended. All rights reserved for the grove (in your world) by Matchless Candles & Sculpture, Inc. 94901".

The figure does still retain is original small round foam piece which had been protectively covering the decorative Pentagram design in the recessed candle holding portion beneath it all these years, and additionally has four (4) small round felt pieces on the underside for added protective cushioning when displayed on a tabletop, desk, shelf, etc.

***Highly cross-collectible, this fabulous sculpture runs the gamut of collectibility - from Matchless Grove candle holders connoisseurs; to mythical & fantasy art aficionados; to pagan & Wiccan decor devotees; to gothic & renaissance style sophisticates; to collectors of wizards, warlocks, sorcerers & magicians memorabilia; to followers of astrology; etc.

Excerpted Online Research Information About the Artist, Jason Christoble, (sometimes erroneously called “Christobles”) and his Company, Matchless Grove Sculpture & Candle Co. (attributed to http://matchlessgrove.spruz.com/about-jason-christoble.htm ): “Not a whole lot is known about Jason. He was born in 1950 and use to sell his creations at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco in the early 70's. He went into business with Daniel Cline in 1975 and founded the Matchless Grove Sculpture & Candle Co. This continued until 1985 when the company became Matchless Gifts Co. His current location is unknown but he is rumored to be a teacher or a lumberjack.

According to J. Paul Moore, a friend of Jason Christoble’s: Circa 1975 I was portraying Sir Francis Drake at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in the Black Point Forest of Marin County as well as The Sir Francis Drake Hotel and aboard the Golden Hinde (replica) in San Francisco Bay. Jason was working Faire as well and I belirve still had The Holy City Zoo in the City. He created this statue, coming to my hippeish digs, The Olde Pirates Home. We planned to market it but ...plans changed." He shows up at Ren Faire on occasion but have not seen him in some years. {Jason, when you read this, contact me}. Well, right off, Jason was/is his own man. a substantial fellow he is quick to break in to a robust laugh that would echo off distant canyons. He is a survivor, equally able to cope with a manor or a pallet off the back of a hillside hooch.

According to Jeff Bedrick, another friend of Jason Christoble’s: Happy to tell you what I know. First, to be more specific about his last known whereabouts, it was Phillipsville, CA. It’s a small town in Mendocino county along the 101. I found a PO box 92 for him there. There was also a phone number but it had been disconnected.

He never stopped making sculptures but his Matchless business was ruthlessly taken from him by his business partner back in the early 80s and he never recovered financially. After that, he continued peddling his work at fairs on a much smaller scale. Some people I know reported seeing him at Renaissance Fairs through the 90s but I haven’t been able to find any direct connection.

“Laughing Man” might be a self portrait. Jason is a stout man with a beard and a hearty laugh.

We became good friends in the late 80s. I’m a fairly accomplished artist and we respected each others’ work a lot. We hung out often. Jason was a peculiar man. He had once owned the Holy City Zoo, a legendary San Francisco comedy club. He knew all the famous comedians and often improvised with them on stage as a “straight man”. He loved to laugh and eat and smoke weed, but he also suffered from occasional depression and constant financial hardship. His parents lived in a nice house in the Madrone Canyon area of Larkspur, CA.

The last time I saw him was at my wedding in 1998. He showed up literally in rags. He called occasionally after that trying to talk me into visiting him in Phillipsville, but I never made it. He was living in a trailer parked on someone’s property. “
