Item/Description: Antique/vintage ca. 1904-1930s "Buster Brown Shoes" hand mirror advertising collectible, manufactured by the J. E. Mergott Co. of Newark, New Jersey.
The silver metalwork on this adorable, promotional advertising premium give-away hand-held pocket-sized/purse-sized vanity mirror is beautifully patterned and textured and has a lovely patina. Its reflective glass side is beveled.
The wording “Buster Brown Shoes” appears within a picture frame-esque, medallion cameo center design.
Vanity hand mirrors such as this were early promotional advertising premium give-a-way items during the first quarter or so of the Twentieth Century, and given that one of the Brown Shoe Company’s most popular advertising slogans back then was “See Yourself in Buster Brown Shoes,” this mirror was the perfect promotional item to suit that saying.
Age/Period: Antique/Vintage - ca. 1904 (early 1900s) to ca. 1930s
*Buster Brown was adopted as the mascot of the Brown Shoe Company in 1904, when the Brown Shoes company bought the rights to the Richard Fenton Outcault cartoon character, Buster Brown (info attributed to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buster_Brown and www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/brown-shoe-company-inc-history/)
Manufacturer/Identification/Markings/Country of Origin: The handle is engraved on one of its sides with this maker’s name: “J. E. Mergott Co., Newark, N. J.”

Condition Summary: Very good vintage collectible condition. There are no cracks to the mirrored surface, with the only noted minor condition factors affecting the mirrored side being those that are not unusual to older mirrors, such as a couple of smoky/foggy-like smudge areas (?oxidation), as well as a smattering of pin prick-sized dark/black/grayish specks on the reflective coating, and only a couple of surface scuff marks adjacent to the edges. The silver metal retains a marvelous patina finish, exhibiting only normal aging markings inherent with older silver pieces. The only noted condition factor being a slight, modest “indent” in the metal adjacent to and beneath the word “Shoes” on the silvered back side.
