Item/Description:  Antique one-of-a-kind Hans Brinker-like circle of Dutch boys & Art Nouveau motifs Flemish art/folk art pyrography/pyrogravure/pokerwork wood-burned box, artist-signed & dated 1905/1906.

***PROVENANCE: Acquired from the estate of Chas. (Charles) W. Smith of Kansas City, Missouri and Prescott, Arizona. Circa the 1905 date that Chas. W. Smith was gifted with this box, he was still a young boy whose father was the eminent proprietor of the “W. H. Smith Meat Market” on Gurley Street in Prescott, Arizona (in addition to this lovely box, we also acquired from this same estate a good deal of antique memorabilia, including a number of photographs depicting everything from the interior of his father’s butcher shop, to horse-drawn hay carts, to a blacksmith’s shop, to his ancestral Victorian home, etc. which we shall also be listing over the coming weeks).

There aren’t sufficient words to describe just how charming and lovely this wood-burnt outsider art box actually is (our photos do not do it justice), with its delightful and realistic (to the time period) cover/lid imagery which depicts a group of four young clogs-wearing Dutch boys/children holding hands, dancing and playing games in a circle/ring formation

And not only is this hand-crafted, hand-carved hinged wooden box with its elaborately embellished wood-burned & surface-etched designs a decorative work of folk art a cherished example of the art of pyrography/pyrogravure (wood burning), but it is also a multi-functional, multi-purpose collectible that will bring a smile to the faces of children and adults (men as well as women) alike.

This ornately adorned box can be used for any and every purpose imaginable - be it merely for decorative display, or to hold any number of personal, household, or even office/business items.

It can, for example, serve as a dresser box OR important papers box OR jewelry box OR gentleman’s box OR keepsake box OR letters box OR memorabilia box OR memory box OR sewing box OR treasure box OR trinket box OR vanity box OR what-not box for decoratively storing away: artist’s supplies (paints, pastels, pencils, etc.), baby keepsakes; children’s treasured items (action figures, baseball cards, chalk, crayons, drawing supplies, marbles, Matchbox cars, paper dolls, trading cards, etc.); collectibles; crafts/crafting/crafter’s supplies (glue gun, glue sticks, ribbons, scissors, tape, etc.); gentleman’s accessories & grooming accouterments (cufflinks, pinbacks, tie bars/tie tacks, jewelry, shaving items, watches, etc.); gloves; greeting cards & stationery; hair and beauty accessories of ladies (combs, hair bands, lipsticks, makeup, nail polish, Scrunchies, etc.); hose/hosiery; jewelry items (bracelets, brooches/pins, necklaces, rings, scarf clips, sweater clips, watches, etc.); letters/correspondence (especially love letters); maps; memorabilia; office supplies (paper clips, Post-Its, staples, etc.); papers (especially precious papers); photographs/photos; postcards; recipes; sewing supplies (buttons, needles, spools, tape measures, thimbles, thread, etc.); stamps; trinkets; what-nots.

Excerpted Online Research Information about the art of Pyrography/Pyrogravure (attributed to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrography): “Pyrography or pyrogravure is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning.

The term means "writing with fire", from the Greek pur (fire) and graphos (writing). It can be practiced using specialized modern pyrography tools, or using a metal implement heated in a fire, or even sunlight concentrated with a magnifying lens.

A large range of tones and shades can be achieved. Varying the type of tip used, the temperature, or the way the iron is applied to the material all create different effects. After the design is burned in, wooden objects are often coloured. Light-coloured hardwoods such as sycamore, basswood, beech and birch are most commonly used, as their fine grain is not obtrusive. However, other woods, such as pine or oak, are also used. Pyrography is also applied to leather items...

Pyrography is also popular among gourd crafters and artists...”
